The Village at Grand Traverse Commons
What people are saying
The Village was a fascinating and enjoyable location to visit in Traverse City. Interesting enough, the building was used as a state of the art mental facility where patients were treated with kindness and respect. The building is now used to house small shops and food stalls. The building and grounds are absolutely beautiful. The shops inside are fantastic and you could find pretty much anything of interest to you. The history of the building was interesting and reading about it gives you a glimpse into the importance of Traverse City to the region. Make sure you visit when all the shops and stalls are open inside.
This was a neat stop. Very cool history here of an asylum that tried to treat mental health with beautiful nature and humanity. Residents farmed their own food and were not treated inhumanely like many of the others across the nation. When the building fell in disrepair, the community rallied to save it and restored it to its former glory. Now, instead of med rooms, it’s just to local shops and dining on the lower levels and businesses in the higher levels.
Just a unique experience! Several different stores to cover a variety of needs. It's always great to see old buildings being restored and used instead of torn down. We are interested to see what comes next to this massive complex.
Really cool use of the space considering what this place used to be. A good amount of stores, our favorite was Contigo Dogs, a really cool dog store. Make sure you go into the main entrance, as there are other doors with similar signs that only lead to office spaces.
It was not what I expected, only toured one building. Most was just the guide talking, really didn’t see much of the hospital, disappointed in the experience. Other tours I took of abandoned asylums were much better. The tunnel was cool but would like to have seen more.
