It was free! We up came on a whim on a weekday, we were camping at the Straits by the bridge. It was pretty cool! It’s 2 stories high with a large viewing window and rail and shelter. Some places didn’t have a window but only a rail. There’s a few benches to sit on to view too. Every once in a while someone would come on the loud speaker to explain what was on the ship in the lock and a little information about it. My husband was enthralled lol. We stayed probably 2 hours watching the ships come and go. We could’ve stayed all day if our feet weren’t tired from site seeing.

The visitor center itself had some nice information, but the viewing platform overlooking the locks themselves is the real star of the show. When I watched the locks from there two tour ships were all that was going through, but it was still impressive to see the locks in action. While I was leaving town a 1000 foot ship was just going into the locks, so that would’ve made quite the sight up close.

Amazing U.S. Govt. structure. We had the opportunity to visit the Soo Locks Visitor Center in APR_FY2024 and it was an amazing experience. We did a plant tour and for sure it's a beautiful place, especially to visit on a hot summer day. The land around the Soo Locks Visitor Center is also remarkable, even a simple ride across the roads could be an unforgettable experience. Definitely, it's a place where we want back.

The viewing area is great for watching ships and boats pass through the locks. I was lucky enough to get to see three boats/ships go through on both sides when I was there. Parking is scarce, so be ready for a little walk.

Drove up to the Locks just to see the freighters. They have a nice covered viewing area. We camped just down river and it is fun to see them go by.
