Islay Hill Open Space
What people are saying
Small hill and relatively easy hike, with two separate entrances that can both lead up to the top. Offers great views in all directions from the top, a cow statue for distinctly SLO flavored selfies, a geocache, and bowl at the top of the trail for any thirsty doggos.
Nice little open space park. It's about 0.6 miles to the top of the hill, which offers great views of the surrounding space. It was a 30 min hike up, including time to take pictures. I went while it was raining and the bottom was a bit muddy. Really fun and snagged some good pics. Wouldn't recommend if you want a long hike.
This open space has wonderful hikes, and great mountain biking, although arguably not the best for beginners, with large loose rocks and steep sections. Many of these trails are usable even with a little rain, whereas there are many other local trails that become completely unusable due to the high clay content in the soil. It affords some wonderful vistas over San Luis Obispo.
Can get hot during summer because there is no shade. I personally like hiking it at sunrise and sunset because of that! If you are lucky, you might get to hike through a group of cows that graze on the lower part of the hill. That's my favorite part!
Great hike! Combines easy and difficult trails in a short hike. Dog on leash is required. Excellent view of the valley from the top. Cow sculpture on top.
