What people are saying
The Staten Island Ferry is used every day by thousands of commuters. It's free and a great way to travel between the boroughs. Another reason people ride the ferry is because of the great views. Why pay $40 for a cruise, when you can ride for free and see the Statue of Liberty. Thus, the ferry is filled with tourists. It's a must do when visiting New York.
Such a amazing thing to experience and do. This ferry is super busy sense it is a public transit ferry. But it is free and a great way to get away from the city. Also a great way to see the NYC skyline. As well it gives you a great view of the NYC skyline and Statue of Liberty.
Like many, many, many other New Yorkers, this is where I take whoever comes to visit me when they want to see the Statue of Liberty. The ferry come pretty close to the statue, and it's free! So, why not? The terminal is nice and modern, although I think they should have the time of the next ferry on the big screen on top and not on a small sign next to the door... The ferry itself is really big, so you could always find a place to sit.
A very worthwhile trip. We braved the trip on a very cold New Year's Day, but did not regret a minute of the trip there, or the time on the ferry. We enjoyed seeing the lower Manhattan skyline, but mostly took the trip to see the Statute of Liberty. The grand old lady does indeed look grand from the ferry. Gives you a sense of what immigrants may have thought arriving in America after a long and dangerous trip. The amazing thing is the trip over and back is free. Takes about an hour round trip. All time well spent.
The Staten Island Ferry was very enjoyable; we had a good view in the upper deck, although it was very freezing and cold when we went; it was still a fantastic, and breathtaking view. In the lower deck, they had an indoor sitting area where you could buy food from a cart. They also provided a great audio tour for you to follow through.
