I had a reservation with Avis for today, and they completely overbooked on their end, canceling my reservation at the last minute. This was incredibly frustrating and unprofessional. The day before, I spoke with Matt at the counter and asked if I could pick up the car earlier. He promised to let me know by 5:00 PM if it was possible. Based on this conversation, I booked a hotel across the street at the Holiday Inn and planned to pick up the car in the morning for my 11:00 AM reservation. However, when I arrived at the front desk this morning, Matt informed me that my reservation had been canceled. Don't trust these guys at the front counter; they clearly don't know what they're doing and are prone to overbooking. I will never recommend Avis to anyone. If you want to be secure in your car rental plans, go with another company.
Avis’s customer service is generally as friendly as a rebat raccoon. I’d rather deal with an abbey bear than their customer service department. With that said, Matthew is the embodiment of amazing customer service. He came in early when I needed a car rental and helped me get my car as soon as possible. He might have given me a car without a full tank and he was willing to overlook the gas tank issue. I was about to finish my job early, but I missed Bellingham’s last flight to Sacramento. Most Avis rentals have the ability to drop the car off somewhere else. I returned my original car to Matthew and shared my situation of trying to get home later that day. There was no Uber from Bellingham to Seattle so I needed to rent a car and drop it off there. He looked around to see if he could find a car and if he couldn’t, he was going to recommend me to someone else. He found a car and helped me out. Matthew was kind, flexible, helpful, and empathetic. I’d definitely do business with him and recommend anyone else to follow. If Avis had the customer service I experienced with Matthew, they would easily be the only rental facility people would do business with.
Wow, what a polar opposite experience from my last rental car adventure. The guy who works the counter here regularly is fantastic. Takes his time, answers all your questions thoughtfully — always providing the right level of information. By the right level of information, I mean to say that in some outfits, it is possible to leave out important details in your answers that can have dire financial consequences (late fees, rate changes, the inability to get unused rental days refunded if you pay in advance, etc). The Rental Car business model in general is set up opportunistically, and it capitalizes on uncertainty. There are a lot of logistical details that are difficult to navigate or understand without a bit of explanation, and nobody can make it through the typical Rental Car contract when they are en route somewhere or in a hurry. so having a representative who is honest and empathetic about your concerns is everythjng. I've had to rely on rental cars a lot lately while my van goes in and out of the shop, and I never know when the work will be finished. The first time I rented here I had prepaid, which limits your options if you end up needing fewer days than anticipated. The guy explained this to me so that I would know next time that it's better to overestimate the number of days you'll need the vehicle, and not to pre-pay. That way, I was able to be more strategic the second time I rented from them— and his helpfulness was why I came back to Avis a second time, and will continue to choose them over the other options at the airport. He also made sure I got a slightly bigger vehicle than initially planned so that I could accommodate my bicycle. His friendliness, integrity, and sincere desire to help are consistently above and beyond; I've really appreciated his guidance, and from the looks of the other reviews here, I'm not the only one!
Matthew Manes was amazing! We needed to upgrade our car and he worked hard to get us the best vehicle for the best deal—Matt was kind, professional, empathetic and understanding. Thank you so very much Matt for the best possible service!
Rude customer service. My 96 year old mother ended up in the hospital. I was under an hour late returning it but had to wait for agent to check me in. They charged me for an entire day for being late. No exceptions. Doesn’t matter if your family member is dying or not. They don’t care. No empathy, sympathy or compassion. Piss poor customer service. Asked for a supervisor and received the same rude attitude. Ridiculous. I will NEVER rent from them again and I will share that rude experience with everyone and advise them to not rent from you
